What are the most important traits for a family lawyer to have?

Family lawyers are some of the most in-demand legal professionals in the world. This is especially true in Western countries where divorce is normalised and even encouraged when relationships start to experience many problems.

The increase in divorces has meant that talented family lawyers are required to help clients navigate the legal complexities of the divorce process. However, it is not always easy to find the best practitioner to assist you if you are going through a divorce and looking for a legal representative.

This is why you should take a look at the following important traits that competent family lawyers need to have.

Communication and negotiation skills

The best family lawyers are very good communications and even better negotiators. The vast majority of divorce-related issues are dealt without outside of the courtroom via private negotiations that are assisted by solicitors.

Therefore, the best practitioners in divorce proceedings are going to be those who have excellent communication skills. They need to be able to have good communication skills to interact with their client, as well as the opposing solicitor when it comes to the details of how things proceed between the two parties.

They also need to be good communicators in terms of empathising and sympathising with their clients. While they are not meant to be therapists, they should still be supportive and keep their clients goal-focused so they can put this chapter of their life behind them.

Organisation skills

Of course, all solicitors need to be highly organised, and family lawyers especially. This is because clients who are going through a divorce can be under a lot of emotional stress, and they will be relying on their legal representative to keep things organised on their behalf.

There are a lot of moving, and fluid elements to a divorce case and family lawyers need to be prepared to deal with them. Whether the matter is solved in or out of court, legal professionals need to be organised so that their clients can have full and complete trust in them.

When it comes time to confront the opposing solicitor, clients want to know that the person they have hired to represent them is organised. It would be terrible if a hired solicitor forgot important documents or was unable to find a proper citation for the precedent that they were referencing in the middle of a tense negotiation.

An interest in protecting children

It’s no secret that children are the worst affected by the divorce of their parents, as the structure of their lives will be upended. The younger the children, the more damage is done, and this is why there is an emphasis on keeping marriages working if at all possible, for the sake of the kids.

However, when divorce needs to happen, the children need to be taken care of. Family lawyers need to have an interest in protecting the best interests of the children throughout all of the proceedings they are involved in.

Sometimes parents will disagree on what the best interests of the children are and can let their animosity cloud their judgement. It is the job of family lawyers to help their clients see past the hatred and find a solution that gives their kids the best future possible in spite of the separation of their parents.

Child custody arrangements need to have the best interests in the child at heart. This is something that all divorce solicitors need to strive for, no matter their level of experience.

Those are the 3 most important traits for a family lawyer to possess.
